HOW TO GET SALON PERFECT NAILS FROM HOME
I love getting my nails done at the salon, but there are times when I simply don’t want to spend the money, or I know I won’t have time to fit it in and I decide to do it from home. Here are some tips and tricks on how to get salon perfect nails from home that are amazing every time..
WHAT YOU WILL NEED
- A BOWL OF YOUR CHOICE AND WARM WATER
- CUTICLE SOAK
- NAIL SISSORS
- NAIL FILE
- CUTICLE PUSHER
- NAIL OIL
- NAIL VARNISH- BASE COAT, COLOUR AND TOP COAT
STEP 1- REMOVING PREVIOUS NAIL VARNISH
Remove any nail polish you have on your nails. If you have gel polish then you will need to soak your nails in acetone to properly remove- put a reasonable amount of the acetone onto the cotton pads, wrap them onto your nail and secure by wrapping tin foil over the top. Leave for around 8 minutes or so and remove with a gel nail varnish scraper. If you have regular nail varnish remove from your nails with a cotton pad and an acetone free remover (acetone isn’t good for your nails but if you have gel you gotta do what you gotta do!) and you’re done!
STEP 2- SOAK THEM!
Even though you are at home, you can still indulge in all the amazing things that the salon has to offer! Fill up any bowl (big enough to submerge all nails) with warm water and add in any gentle face cleanser or shampoo of your choice (try to go for a natural one). Let your fingers or toes soak in there for around 3-5 minutes, then remove and pat dry.
STEP 3- SHAPE AND CLEAN
Now it’s time to shape them to your desired preference. I tend to go for quite a square and short shape with my nails, and I almost always pick a nude colour (isn’t it weird how most of us only ever wear one colour lol) Once you have decided your shape, go ahead and begin to file them down, very gently- a lot of people make the mistake of being really rough when filing their nails, which can actually tare them and really damage them. Take your time and file them until they look exactly how you want. Next, apply a cuticle remover (a great one is ) and gently begin to push your cuticles back. You want to be getting rid of the excess skin but you want to be careful not to push too far back. It’s better to under-do this step than over-do it because you want to be careful not to damage your nails- you only want to clean them up.
STEP 4- CLIP AWAY
Once you have pulled up all the nasty bits from your nail with your cuticle pusher, you want to get rid of it all by using some cuticle clippers. These are basically a very small pair of scissors specifically designed to get rid of those tiny, annoying bits of skin that lay around the nail. Don’t get to close with these, just gently clip away the excess skin and tidy them up.
STEP 5- POLISH!
Now it’s the fun part! Start with a base coat (a clear nail varnish that will make your nails last longer) and do one layer on all nails and then let dry. Then begin to paint with the colour of your choice. Really take your time (there’s no need to rush these steps) and neatly paint each nail, scraping away the nail brush each time on the pot to ensure there is not too much polish being applied. Do two coats of this colour and leave to dry completely. Finally add your top coat, which is what will bring the gorgeous shine to your nails and help them last 10x longer. Let dry for around 20-30 minutes (sounds like a lot but you want them to be completely dry so that you don’t smudge them- sit and watch tv!) If you are new at painting your own nails, try to stick with a lighter colour- it will be less noticeable if you make small mistakes.
STEP 6- MOISTURISE
Moisturising is a very important step to an at home manicure because you have taken a lot of moisture out of your hands and nails due to the soaking and cleaning. Apply a nail oil to each nail and gently rub in, mainly focusing on the cuticle area of the nail. Then apply your favourite hand cream and rub all over. Mositurising is key- you can’t have gorgeous looking nails and dry hands lol!
STEP 7- TAKE CARE OF YOUR NAILS
Take care after you have done your nails to ensure that they aren’t getting chipped (if you find that they’re getting chipped too soon, you might want to swap to another brand of nail varnish) Apply a top coat every couple of days to make sure that they are still looking salon perfect, and not becoming stained or dull from whatever you may be doing.
With these steps, it will 10x easier to get salon perfect nails straight from your own home. It is obviously lovely going to a salon once in a while, but these steps will save you time and money and you’ll still get the same results!
